Happy Birthday!!

Today is Art Spiegelman’s birthday. I haven’t read a lot of his work; I gravitate toward work that is escapist in nature, his stuff is steeped in TRUTH. I have, of course, read Maus multiple times.

I believe that he is the poster child for craft and for honesty in comics. I believe that he elevates our medium. I am ashamed that I’ve seen so little of his work. I know more about him than my reading experience would lead you to believe, though, and I have a great deal of admiration for who he is and how he does things, even if I’m more of a mainstream guy at heart.

Anyway, I just thought that you should know that.

I agree with your assessment of Spiegelman, but you shouldn’t feel bad about having read little of his work outside of Maus– as an editor and critic he has contributed as much to comics (if not more) as an artist.
    BTW Hunter Black is stupendous!

Ah, I feel bad anyway. I mean, this is what I DO, this is my career. I feel like I should have a more thorough knowledge of the pioneers of the medium.

That said, I’m also not rushing out to rectify the situation. I’m just a writer, and his work holds a lot more for the full-on cartoonist, I think. Also, almost everything I write is genre fiction, whether in comics, TV, film, whatever. So…I feel bad. But not THAT bad.

Thank you so much for the kind words! We’re just getting started!

“Maliya’s only line of dialogue here happens to be a quote from another famous work. The first person to correctly tell me the book and the character who says it will get a prize of some kind. (No, I have no idea what the prize is, but I’ll think of something.) UPDATING TUESDAYS AND FRIDAYS!! PLEASE LEAVE US A COMMENT BY CLICKING ON THE BLOG POST BELOW!!!”

The line is from Return of the King (J.R.R. Tolkien), the last chapter before the Appendices, the last line in the chapter. Sam says it when he returns to his home in Hobbiton from the Grey Havens after having seen Frodo board a ship for the undying lands.

Yes, I am a total Tolkien geek.

    And now, some fighting!

Perhaps Hunter is going to get a little betrayal injection too.

    Should be interesting. Need . . . More . . . Panels!

Ah. Betrayal for his sword. Didn’t think of that.

“A little betrayal injection?” That’s a new one!
